Some of my fondest childhood memories are of helping around the
kitchen, canning raspberries and cherries in the summer, cooking
applesauce from our own apples in the fall; and in winter, baking a
batch of spicy ginger cookies, or my favorite, chocolate chip pie. I
remember the sounds and wonderful aromas, but mostly it was the feeling
of love that goes with preparing foods for family and friends. Of
course, there's lots to learn in a kitchen, too, about when to follow a
recipe word for word, and when to take off on flights of imagination.
Was it home cooking that inspired our own children to great success in
the kitchen? Or just their opportunity to say, "at last, no more
chicken livers!"
